Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I had a cortisone injection into my shoulder 10 days ago with no improvement or pain relief. Since then I ve had a couple of episodes of flushing and a pounding heart which have lasted about 30 mins each time. My gp wants to repeat the injection this week (only 2 weeks after the first one) as I m still in severe pain. However, I m anxious about the flushing etc and wonder how long it takes for cortisone to be eliminated from the body?
Hello! Cortisone is a type of steroid, a drug that lowers inflammation, and thus helps in pain relief. It may act for 24-48 hours. Cortisone injections are very safe to perform. Side effects tend to be rare and minor. Patients may experience flushing sensation and redness of their face following the injection. These reactions are quite common and not of much concern since they self-resolve.
