How Long Does Ramipril Take To Lower Blood Pressure Levels?

Hi. I just started taking 2.5 Ramipril once a day, my first one was yesterday.....Does it take a few days to bring your BP down or should it start to work straight away? And should I be concerned about side affects as I suffer from a lot of allergies including being allergic to the sun? I went cold turkey in November last year after being on opioid s and other meds for over 10 years including high doses of Morphine SR and Diazepam could this be helping to increase my BP? Thank you

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

In fact drugs used to control BP takes time and time must be given before deciding anything else. BP can well be down in few days but may take 6 weeks. We don't increase the dose or we don't change the drugs in this time. We wait for 4 to 6 weeks for any effect of antihypertensive drugs. Regarding the side effects, Ramipril are pretty safe however it can cause many effect though not very commonly. Cough is one main reason that we may be changing the drugs as it occurs in about 10% of people. Other side effects important is first dose effect that is you may feel dizzy initially with the drug so better start it taking in the night.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
