How Long Does Tetanus Shot Provide Protection Against Rabies?

I found this stray kitten outside my doorstep around 3 months ago and took him in. He s about 2-4 months that time. I don t know where the mother is or if it is still around. I brought the kitten 2 weeks after I took him in to a vet and he told me that the kitten was healthy and all.So just yesterday, as I was doing the laundry. The kitten decided to come near be but as he was midway, hr suddenly realized the waters on the floor and got scared by it. I decided to pick him up and bring him back to the living room when he suddenly struggled off my arms and climb to my shoulders. When I was taking him down, he bited my neck until I was able to get him off my forcing his mouth to let go of my skin. There was no bleeding nor open wounds, only 4 punctured wounds that I immediately cleaned with 70% alcohol. Today, my cat doesn t seem to be acting weird. However I m still scared if I might have been infected with rabies if he ever has one since he still have no rabies vaccine. I ve had a tetanus vaccine 2 years ago which as I remember last up to 10 years. Should I still be worried around it???

Hi,

The tetanus shot does not provide protection against rabies. Protection for rabies is a special series of vaccinations. Yes, you should be worried about it. But if the cat is only indoors then although rabies vaccination is a good idea...the risk is pretty small. Consult the health department. I suspect observation is all that is required.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
