Fungal infections usually resolve with topical and or oral treatment. As the infection resolves you will observe that the discharge is lesser and not curd like. That is the vaginal discharge becomes less and gets back to normal. If there was irritation and discomfort that also reduces. The fungus that affects the vagina is called Candida. It usually resolves with treatment. In some patients it may recur in which case another course of treatment is required. Some of the causes for vaginal fungal infection are Diabetes mellitus ( increased blood sugar in simple terms), Prolonged use of antibiotics etc. You may get your blood sugar tested also . You may wait for your period to occur naturally or you may take the medicine for the same as advised. This does not affect the fungal treatment as such. If the fungal infection does not resolve with topical application , one of the other methods of treatment is a tablet called Fluconazole 150 mg which is taken as a single dose. As a complementary measure fungal infections may be be minimized by using loose cotton clothing and inner wear. Avoid synthetic inner clothing such as nylon as this promotes a humid damp setting for fungal growth. Research also says that having probiotics such as in yoghurt/curd is beneficial as it helps in protecting the beneficial flora.
