How Long Does Recovery Take After Second Schizophrenic Attack?
Hello Doctor,I am Marzia. My elder sister,Farhana is 24 years old and unmarried. She had an attack of schizophrenia in 2005.then it took about one year to get recovery through taking medicines.but since four months ,at novenber 2013 she stopped taking medicines fearing the side affects. We did not understand that her condition was getting worse.but one week ago,she suddenly became violent and symptoms of catatonic schizophrenia were observed. We had no other way than having her hospitalized. How long can it take to get recovery this time and as it is the second attack, can it take more time to return back to normal life than the first time? Please let me know.Thanks.
I can understand your concern towards your sister's health and really do appreciate it a lot.
Schizophrenia is usually a chronic disorder and a patient may experience multiple exacerbation and remissions.
During any episode of acute attack, as seen clinically, most patients usually start showing recovery within the first 15 days of starting the treatment and may take around a month or few month to show good recovery.
I don't think that it is going to take more time to return to normal during this episode specially because she was on medication till few months back and had recently stopped it.
Now, it is likely that her doctor will continue her medicine for a very long time to prevent future relapse.
Be cool, it is treatable still if you stick to the treatment until otherwise told by the psychiatrist treating her. An abrupt stoppage has caused the relapse.Even if the symptoms have been disappeared, the psychiatrists may suggest for maintenance doze and a periodical review. Follow the treatment schedule meticulously. It won't take much longer period for a recovery.
