Hi, Thanks for writing to us, Not all newborn babies are screened for drugs in all hospitals unless drug abuse is known through history or suspected in the mother. If there are signs of toxicity in the newborn then it may be tested. Smoked methamphetamine can be detected by tests for upto 3 days. Other factors like duration, frequency and doseage of drug intake also play a role. If the test comes back positive, the doctors will look for any signs of toxicity or withdrawal in the baby to ensure safety of the child. If an addiction is found in the mother then detoxification will be advised.
