after a person has been diagnosed with strep throat, what is the time frame for being contagious, reason i ask is our son went to his doctor and found out he has strep throat. they planned on coming over for thanksgiving, the issue is my wife had a quintuple bypas on 10-31-2015 and i am worried about her immune system
Understanding your concern. As per your query your son have strep throat which seems to be due to poor maintenance of hygiene as there is infection in throat leading to Strep throat. It could be due to bacterial infection of upper respiratory tract as well. Need not to worry. This infection is contagious so you should keep little distance. It will take around 1 week for complete cure. I would suggest you to start with warm saline gargles and betadine gargles 3-4 times a day. For pain and swelling you should take ibuprofen or acetaminophen. Consult ENT specialist for proper diagnosis and rule out condition like strep throat and viral infection. Doctor may prescribe antibiotics along with decongestants and anti inflammatory.
Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes, Dr. Harry Maheshwari
