Hi, thanks for posting your concern in the HCM. For type 2 diabetes, metformin is definitely the first line agent for treatment. However, diet and lifestyle modifications are two most important factors in the management of diabetes. Do not skip meals. Even distribution of food will prevent fluctuation of blood glucose level. Be sure to spread your carbohydrate intake evenly throughout the day.Eat 3 meals a day, plus snacks as needed. Eating at regular intervals helps control hunger and prevents overeating at the next meal. High fiber diet is encouraged (for example, whole grain breads and cereals; fresh fruits and vegetables; beans and legumes) & there is no limit on vegetables and green salads. Protein rich foods (e.g.fish, poultry, egg-whirte, pulses etc.) help to control hunger between meals. High fat diet (High-fat meats, skin on poultry, chips, sausages, luncheon meats, crackers, whole milk, all fried foods, refried beans, cheeses, pastries, cookies ) should be avoided. Avoid any form of tobacco and alcohol. Salt or sodium should be restricted (Lifestyle modification is especially needed for sedentary workers. Regular session of exercise/yoga/brisk walking, if possible and if not contraindicated for any other disease (e.g. ischaemic heart disease, joint disease etc.) is to be done at least 4 days in a week for at least 30 min.
