How Long Of A Surgery Is Expected For A Small Bowel, Bypass Barring Any Complications? Taking Losartan And Pletas Tablets.
How long of a surgery is expected for a small bowel, bypass...barring any complications. What is the normal expected hospital stay and then the at home recovery period and what are the restrictions? When can one expect to be able to eat a "normal" diet? Are there any statistics for this surgery? The surgery would be to correct a sbo due to radiation enteritis due to bladder cancer radiation 6 1/2 years ago...I am 71 years old and probably would consider myself in pretty good health for my age...Only RX meds are losartan 100mg and now started taking pletas for leg cramping because of compromised arterial function......Thanks

Hi,
Based on the information you are looking for the duration of the time taken to get well for small bowel, bypass surgery if no complication occurs on the way. With the normal diet and you had history of bladder cancer and had a treatment for it with radiation 61/2 yrs ago, and current medications are losartan
The answer to that question is about 3-4 weeks, where 3-5 days will be a hospital stay and rest at home care for about 3 weeks. With 5-7 days follow up interval for next 3 weeks. If stitches/ staples are taken to close the abdominal wall , they will be removed about at 4 week once entire cut is healed. (All considering every things stays normal with out complications)
Hello, You are 71 years old. You have radiation Enteritis. Probably you are in sub acute intestinal obstruction. Acute intestinal obstruction needs immediate emergency surgery. A simple obstruction can be treated conservatively for some time. Dehydration and electrolyte abnormalities due to vomiting; respiratory compromise from pressure on the diaphragm by a distended abdomen, aspiration of vomitus, bowel ischemia or perforation from prolonged distension indicators for surgery. The usual surgery time for resection and anastomosis/ bye pass surgery is one and half hrs to 2 hrs. Liquid diet on the 2nd P.O day, Soft solid on the 3rd P.O.Day, solid diet on the 4th or 5th P.O.Day. Suture removal between 8th to 10th P.O. Day. Regular work in one monrh time. Object lifting after 6 mths. Whatever tabs you are taking you have to continue. Usually the P.O. Days will be uneventful. Nothing to worry. Best wishes
