How Often Does Shingles Re-occur?

Hello. I am a 60 year old newly diagnosed Multiple Myeloma patient. I will begin chemo in two weeks. I had a shingle vaccine on June 15 (two weeks ago) and we are waiting until 1 month after the vaccine to start the chemo. I had shingles 8 years ago. I have a rash that is 36 hours old that appears to be a mild shingles outbreak. How often do patients who receive the vaccine actually have an outbreak of shingles immediately afterward?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

The amount of time between the first case of shingles and a recurrence has not been well-researched. In the study from 2011, the recurrence occurred from 96 days to 10 years after the initial shingles outbreak, but this study covered only a 12-year period. If you've had shingles once, you probably won't get it again. That doesn't mean it can't happen; it's just unlikely.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Rakesh Rai
