How Reliable Is HIV DNA PCR Test At 25 Days Of Exposure?
Hello Doctor. I engaged in a low risk sexual encounter (protected vaginal intercourse) with a commercial sex worker. I am receptive (bottom) and I am not sure whether condom broke or not during tat time. So, due to my anxiety, on 25th day after my exposure I went for HIV DNA PCR and HIV - antibody and also got tested for all other STD s. All the results came back NEGATIVE. Could you please tell how much reliable is the HIV DNA PCR test at 25 days of exposure?
Hello! I read carefully your query and understand your concern.
Since you had protected intercourse and you tested negative 25 days of exposure ,this result is very reliable. HIV DNA is fairly accurate (95%) after 28 days of exposure. I would suggest to repeat HIV-antibody test 3 months after the exposure so you can be 100 % sure you are HIV negative and then rest your mind.
You don't need to worry, the 3 month test is just to confirm the results of earlier tests.I am convinced it will result negative too.
Hope my answer has helped. Best Regards Dr.Rovena
