my husband has just been to see the locum dr as he has had an allergic reaction causing hives all over his thighs, arms and hands, bottom and back. this occured on wednesday evening and he has been taking 10ml of benadryl syrup daily - however the rash is still itchy and tight and spreading further - it has gone from lumps to wheals and is now merging into large red areas that look like sunburn as well. the locum has given him a cortosteriod cream to use twice a day and has told him to take 8ml of benadryl 3 times a day - the box says 10ml max daily, as does a medical book i have at home and the on call dr we spoke to on wednesday eve also said the max dose is 10ml. without wanting to overdose my husband on the locum's advice (we've never met him before) or causing the locum offence by questioning his knowledge of medicine could you please tell me whether 8ml of benedryl 3 times a day is safe for my husband to have? He is 20 stone in weight and is 5ft 11 tall. he doesn't have anaphalaxis (i have epi-pens myself and i am fully aware of the signs of this), his face, tongue, throat and breathing are fine and his bp is stable and hasn't dropped, he has no shortness of breath or tightness and has no dizzyness or headache - just feels itchy, tight skinned on arms mainly and hot skinned where inflammed but cool otherwise. he is on bloodpressure medication daily 40mg lisinapril, 2.5mg bendrafluazide, 5mg amlodapine. he has been taking 250mg daily terbinafine for 1mth due to a fungal toenail infection and using canesten cream twice daily - but the locum said to discontinue the terbinafine - as we queried whether this caused the reaction - though we suspect fence panel treatment on some panels my husband helped my cousin carry into his house on wednesday around 6pm (rash first noticed around 7/8pm on his back) thankyou. emma x
