How To Check Estrogen Level?

I just turned 50 in April of this year and never missed a menstrual cycle since the age of 13. The last 4 months I have missed my menstrual cycle 2 times and 1 time I had it for 1 day. My husband and I have been married for 29yrs but together a total of 34 and our sex life has been great but I don t feel the as in the mood like I use to before a month ago. What can I do, or how can I check my estrogen level.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

I believe your key concern is that is whether the diminished libido is related to low estrogen level with menopause or perimenopause. This can be checked by checking serum FSH level, which id raised, marks the beginning of menopause.

In early menopause - it is unusual to have diminished libido due to low estrogen levels. Often early symptoms of low estrogen levels are hot flushes and mood changes, which by themselves can interfere with sec drive. I suggest try to deal with this with dietary and lifestyle changes in the first instance.

The diminished libido might be related to other psychological and emotional issues that may be ongoing. It might be a case of sitting down with your partner and understanding what might be the underlying issue - emotional/ psychological or a physical reason such as local pain or dryness. It will help you decide the next recourse, i.e. whether to go for counselling or use physical measures to alleviate symptoms.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
