Stopping suddenly can cause serious withdrawal. Often an inpatient stay is needed to safely come off of alcohol as well as to initiate long term addiction treatment. Group/family meetings are helpful. Also possibly helpful are a variety of medications: antabuse, naltrexone, and/or campral.
