Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Traveling and not sure who to ask: long haul flight last weekend, feet and right leg swelled up. Swelling reversed same day. Now I m paranoid I m going to have a DVT prompted PE. I ve been belching all morning and can t tell whether vague pain in my chest is all in my head or not.
Swelling of legs, especially tibial shin and dorsum of the foot is very common after sitting or travelling for a long time.
It is due to decrease in the venous return to the heart causing stasis of venous circulation.
It will happen due to two reasons 1. Decreased cardiac output - Due to heart condition. 2. Increased fluid overload - Increased intake of water or renal disorders.
It rarely cause DVT and other complications. So dont worry.
what best you can do is to get blood pressure checked, 2D Echo scanning done to look for ejection fraction.
Thirdly Taking a mild diuretic will decrease the edema ideally like thiazides or loop diuretics if there is no contraindication.
Thanks
