How To Get Rid Of Belching And Hiccups After Eating?

After I have eaten, in about 1 hour or so, I have a lot of belching along with hiccups. Sometimes I feel the gas move up into my upper chest and this causes on occasion my heart to thump a few times and this is relieved when I belch. I have tried digestive enzymes and they heip a little. I am 73 years old. Any suggestions ?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The possible reason for this is chronic gastritis with or without underlying ulcer.

Guidelines at present are:
- Strict dietary measures to prefer a vegan diet and avoid spices, non-veg.
- Proton pumps inhibitor in empty stomach with antacids help.
- Maintain hydration and sound sleep.
- Avoid stress, and anxiety.
- Smoking should be strictly prohibited.

As per the clinical improvement, I suggest ultrasound with or without upper GI endoscopy.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel
