Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi I,ve had a cold for 2 and a half weeks now. I had a 7day course of anti biotics, 2 different cough bottles and 2 different courses of de-congestion tablets. I am still coughing up coloured phlegm for over 3 hours after wakening and throughout the day. I am also sleeping 12 hours at a time and when awake have no energy. Should I contact my doc for another course of anti biotics. I've got a new cough bottle today, is their anything else I can do to get me 100% well again.
The cough associated with upper respiratory tract infections can sometimes lasts for weeks even after all of the other symptoms have resolved.
Since your cough is productive/wet, then you may want to consider the use of a mucolytic. This would help to break up the cough and allow you to expel the mucus easier.
If the cough is persistent, your doctor may want to consider whether you may benefit from a short course of a beta agonist. These open up the airways. Airway closure can also cause persistent coughing and it can occur in persons who are not asthmatic.
I hope this helps
