Dear Dr, I am Dr.Murali Bhat, confused with my wife Tripti's triple marker test. She is 36, and this is her second pregnancy. First baby is normal. LMP July 5th, AVG gestational age as per usg on 7/11/11 is 18wks and one day. FHR on that day 145, Nuchal fold thickness on 29/9/11 was 1.2mm. Triple marker test on 14/11/11 AFP=40.7ng/ml HCG=38695 mlU/ml uE3=1.05ng/ml. The graph shows risk of 1:80. Kindly suggest
Triple test is done to analyse risk for a baby with possible developmental problems especially if mother is more than 35 years of age. In your wife the nuchal thickness and FHR are normal for the baby.
The triple marker test checks for levels of AFP, HCG and uE and the graph result in your wife is that the baby might have a risk of 1 in 80 to have some abnormality. This means if there are 80 women with pregnancy having the levels as in your wife then 79 will have a normal baby and only one will have baby with problems.
Please do not worry if ultrasound scan is showing normal baby.
