Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Taking a PPI for a couple years now on a daily basis due to non erosive gastritis. Recent dexa scan shows 5.4% decrease in the values within the lumbar spine and 9.7% decrease in the values within the total left hip. These are significant. Previous dexa scan was 2 years prior and normal. Could it be from taking PPI? Is there a way I can get off the PPI, re: an alkaline diet? Concerned about the bone loss... Mom had osteoporosis.
PPI may cause osteoporosis but also think for other possibilities like low calcium diet, decreased vitamin d level and decresed calcium absorption.
Try to stop the PPI along with lifestyle changes may useful. If no improvement then needs to take calcium or vitamin d supplementation. If no response needs bisphosphonate therapy.
Please consult your physician he will examine and treat you accordingly.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
