How To Proceed With This PSA Test Result?

I had a psa test and it came back high at 4.44. All previous test (I have them done yearly) have been at .5. They are sending me to a urologist for further screening. I m really scared. I m 55, one cousin on mothers side got prostate cancer at 60. No other family history. I have had prostate and epidymus infections in my 20 and 30s. I have some mild symptoms such as urge to go and some difficulty completely stopping. Only get up once at night to go. Dr alays said prostate felt normal but was boggy or full. He didn t do digital rectal exam this time and is rather sending me to see a urologist. Could that quick and high of a rise in psa be something other than cancer?

Hello,

Your PSA value falls under grey zone and it can be due to infection or less likely due to cancer. I will suggest to repeat PSA after 3-4 weeks and if it is same or rising, then undergo imaging and biopsy for the diagnosis.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
