How To Reduce Swelling And Buckling In Knee After Fall?
I am experiencing knee pain after I fell to my right knee. This has resulted in some swelling and occasional buckling or collapsing of the knee while walking, resulting in another fall. What should I do to reduce swelling and strengthen the knee? Will walking improve or aggravate this condition?
Hi, Pain is a part of injury to the knee ( may be bony or ligamentous ) but buckling of the knee points towards instability and this is due to ligamentous injury, most probably the ACL ( anterior cruciate ligament ) whose function normally is to prevent the anterior translation of tibia over the femur.
TREATMENT: 1) First and foremost is to prevent such repeated episodes of buckling as it further causes to the articular cartilage and hence early onset of arthritis. This can be done by using a LONG LEG KNEE BRACE. 2)Thorough orthopaedic clinical evaluation of the knee to strongly suspect ACL tear. 3) MRI SCAN of the knee to confirm the diagnosis and to see the severity of the tear ( significant or non significant ) 4) Partial tears can be treated conservatively with rest, exercises, brace 5) significant tears ( full tears / avulsion) need sugical reconstruction to prevent subsequent buckling episodes (instability).
