How To Treat Bi-lateral Microtia Condition?

Hello, My name is Marina, I m from Johannesburg, South Africa, My grandson who is 6 yrs old was born with Bi-lateral Microtia and has worn a BAHA hearing aid on a band since 6months old. His speech is perfect and he is quite advanced for his age. His inner ear is apparently normal but does not have the outer ear or ear canal. His parents now want to do implants oh the Bone conducted hearing aid.My Questions: How successful are these implants? What is the rejection rate? If rejected - can the implant be redone?Should they rather consider plastic surgery for outer ears with opening of the ear canal? What are the procedures for implants or ear reconstruction?Who should we consult with in Johannesburg. Thanks Marina

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted the history about your Grandson having microtia, undeveloped ears externally, fortunately the hearing and speech are normal. Wants to know where to contact and whether such surgeries are successful.
Yes such surgeries as to reconstruction of ears, face all are very successful due to additional experience the fraternity has got with lots of literature, experiences and discussion about hte outcome of various procedures.
I would advise you the following in such a case:
Consult an ENT Surgeon as he would know the best Surgeon experienced in such cases, the age at which the surgery is started as these may needs few times revision as the person grows.
Surgeries for implantation of ears are now-a-days successful with great results.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General and ENT Surgeon
