How To Treat A Broken Femur Leading To Pain?

My mother broke her femur over a year ago and plates and screws were put in. One of the screws is too long and has been rubbing against bone causing enormous amount of pain and therefore she is still walking with a walker. Can just the screw be replaced with a shorter screw or would all of the hardware have to be removed?
