How To Treat Frequent Hic-cups After Recovering From Liver Resection Surgery?

My husband is in the hospital recovering from liver resection surgery to remove two Cancer spots, operation was successful BUT he has had hic-cups-cups for two days, and now very tired and of course not eating, I know there is no cure for hic-cups. But is there something he can take to help them subside, and lighten up?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Hiccup can result following abdominal surgery due to irritation of phrenic nerve resulting in spasm of diaphragm, a kind of muscle which separates chest cavity from abdomen.
Usually hiccups get subsided by itself within 24 hours but one can take medication if it persists.
Its not that there is no treatment but we have symptomatic cure with drugs like antihistaminics (cinnarizine, betahistine) or chlorpromazine or antispasmodics.
You consult your gastro surgeon if hiccups had lasted for more than 2 days and get treatment.
Don't worry your husband will be alright.
Thanks
