Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My husbank has intractable, persistent hiccups. Thorazine, Reglan, etc. has not worked. He takes prilosec but that hasn't seemed to slow them down. He is sleep deprived and just fatigued all the time. He has had them in the past and they lasted several months. This bout is going on about 3 mons. now. He is 62 years old.
Hi. Thanks for your query. Noted the history and understood your concerns. Persistent hiccoughs in a 62 year old male for three months indicates that there may be a cause for which I would advise him the following: Clinical evaluation by a Doctor for possible causes of hiccups the commonest causes and the investigations to be done are: Irritation to the diaphragm to be investigated by CT scan of teh chest and abdomen. This will also help to identify if there is any irritating factor for the phrenic nerve supplying the diaphragm the irritation of which causes hiccups. Kidney function tests as kidney dysfunction can cause hiccups. Psychological causes, as hibit or due to stress and anxiety, evaluate properly and get treated.
