How To Treat My Blocked Left Ear?

I was in Bali a few days ago and got water in my ears, water would not come out of left ear so used some oil based antiseptic, this produced some waxy discharge, but still blocked ear. I used more ear drops on end of cotton bud and retrived some solid dark wax. Ear still feels blocked, and am still 80% deaf in that ear. Saw a resort doctor who inspected the ear, but said it all looked normal, no infection , no wax, gave me some Otosporin just in case. Two days later I am still deaf in that ear , no pain. Eustacian tubes still pop ok both sides. When doing sport left ear makes thumping noise like pulse beat. if i pull on lobe it makes a rubbing sound for a couple of seconds after, any ideas? Age 55.

Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Looking at your symptoms, you might be suffering from Wax blockage in left ear. As water might have gone inside ear, it would have caused swelling of the wax leading to blockage of ear. You tried to clean the ear and as a result, the outer part of wax would have come out.

But the deeper part of wax might have gone more deeper which your doctor could not have observed without using an otoscope.

It would be advisable to consult an otolaryngologist doctor for examination of ear by an otoscope and treat accordingly. If it is wax, then cleaning of ear would be needed. Avoid water going inside ear. Ear plug may help to prevent water from going inside ear. Also avoid self cleaning of ear as it may lead to any discharge/wax go further deep inside ear or it may lead to infection in the outer ear.

Hope this answers your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Riddhi Shah
