How To Treat Pain And Swelling In Foot Caused After Ankle Injury?

Hi, I broke my right heel and sprained that ankle 3 months ago. I was in a cast and non weight bearing for 6 weeks and then I was placed in a walking boot for 5 weeks. I was given the okay almost 3 weeks ago to wear normal shoes again but my foot still hurts so bad. I ve started wearing my boot again. My foot swells every so often but not nearly as bad as it did the first 9 weeks. It also turns VERY red every time I take a shower. It is still very tender when I walk barefoot. Should I go back to my Dr? Get an MRI? Suggestions and explanations, please?! Thank you!

General & Family Physician 's  Response

Hi
Thank you for asking HCM.
I have gone through your query. Pain and swelling will be present for long term in case of ankle sprain or strain. Ice pack application and raising legs while sleeping and sitting will be helpful. If it persist then consult your orthopaedician and have a control X ray. If X ray is fine and there is any signs serious ligament or muscle injury MRI might be required. Now a consultation with an orthopaedician is well appreciated.
Let me know if anything not clear. I am happy to help you.
Thanks.
I find this answer helpful
