I can understand your concern.
Cough in children can be because of several conditions. It could be because of infection. But that is only one of the causes. Conditions like
asthma,
tuberculosis, foreign body should be ruled out. For that a proper history and physical examination is required. If there is history of
choking we think of foreign body. If there is
weight loss along with fever in cough of long duration we think of tuberculosis. Further investigations like PEFR, mantoux,
X ray chest, total blood counts etc are required to identify the cause. Management depends on the cause identified. Repeated antibiotic courses may not be of much use.
