Pediatrician 's  Response

Hi,

Thanks for writing to health care magic.
I can understand your concern.

Cough in children can be because of several conditions. It could be because of infection. But that is only one of the causes. Conditions like asthma, tuberculosis, foreign body should be ruled out. For that a proper history and physical examination is required. If there is history of choking we think of foreign body. If there is weight loss along with fever in cough of long duration we think of tuberculosis. Further investigations like PEFR, mantoux, X ray chest, total blood counts etc are required to identify the cause. Management depends on the cause identified. Repeated antibiotic courses may not be of much use.

Continue to ask further queries as required.
Hope this helps.
Take care.
