How To Treat Severe Shoulder Pain Caused Due To Arthritis?

My husband, 52 yr. old white male, is experiencing some drastic changes in his health...First let me tell you a little of his medical history..his mother had a history of high blood pressure resulting in several heart attacks, couple open heart surgeries and dying of a stroke in her mid 70 s. His father developed diabetes, was Rx d with Temporal Artery Disease and after going blind, died in his mid 70 s...My husband currently takes 100mg Blood medication for high blood pressure and a 300mg twice daily generic for Zantac. He recently visited his Physician because he was having extreme pain in his shoulder and he had recently had (what he thought was Strep Throat) but after he became better, noticed that he could no longer smell or taste, and 3 months later, he still cannot smell or taste. after consult, the Dr. recommended he take a Steroid shot for his shoulder and did nothing about the other issue of not being able to smell or taste, stating that sometimes as we get older we start to lose these senses??? Since taking the shot, my husband has only changed one thing in his routine, he began working another job, that required him to clean bird droppings and dirt from bags of potting soils, grass seeds and etc. that were placed in Lawn and Garden Sections, such as Home Depot and Lowe s. He also had to handle chemicals such as Weed be Gone and Insecticides. He began this second job just days before taking this Steroid Shot and after the shot, he noticed he had developed diarrhea and now another condition of a rash.. this has all happened since around April 14, 2015. He had an X-ray done on the shoulder and was told he had Arthritis because he told the Dr. the shot did not ease the pain. The rash is located mostly on his arms, and legs, and seems to be showing up now in other places, chest area and buttocks. I know that bird droppings can be very harmful to humans If they are in direct contact with large amounts of it. Please help, no one seems to know why his sense of taste and smell have stopped and what caused the sudden onset of diarrhea and rash.

Hello,

Symptoms currently are pain in the shoulder, diarrhea and rash. First let me address diarrhea. Take oral rehydration solutions are very important to prevent dehydration and electrolyte deficiencies. If an infectious pathology is suspected, antibiotics are to be used. If Amoebic dysentery (most common) is suspected, tab. Ofloxacin in combination with ornidazole is to be taken twice daily for 5 days. Probiotics like saccharomyces boulardii are to be taken if a rotavirus diarrhea is suspected.

Pain in the shoulder may be due to osteoarthritis, frozen shoulder as in diabetes, subacromial bursitis, rotator cuff tendinopathy or polymyalgia rheumatica. The treatment options include analgesics like NSAIDs Ibuprofen and Aceclofenac can be taken for 2 weeks. Opioid analgesics can also be taken. To avoid gastric irritation, tab. Pantop 40 can be taken daily before food. Physical therapy of rotator cuff strengthening exercises would help reduce the pain in long run.

Coming to rashes, provided your working conditions and exposure to bird droppings, it could be due to atopic eczema or allergic contact dermatitis. Treatment includes topical corticosteroids like Hydrocortisone ointment 1% or Betamethasone 0.1% topical can be used. Antihistaminics like Atarax or Benadryl can be helpful. If the rash doesn't subside with above medication and diarrhea persists, please contact a physician in person.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
