How To Treat Swollen And Enlarged Tonsils With Red Lines?

I have swollen and enlarged tonsils with red lines going through them. I have been on 2 rounds of antibiotics and have had 2 throat cultures which have come back negative for bacteria infections. There is some sharp pain at time but not upon swallowing. My left ear aches at times also. Any suggestions?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The symptoms seem to be related to tonsillitis which is an infection of the tonsils. Based on the fact that the culture come up negative, the possibility of a bacterial infection is very low. In my opinion, no antibiotic is needed. The tonsil inflammation can be caused by a viral infection. I recommend anti inflammatory medications such as Tylenol three times a day. I also recommend to gargle with salty water and drink liquids.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dorina Gurabardhi, General & Family Physician
