Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
How do I come off. 20mg of celexa that I have been taking for 5 years.? I stopped taking it 3 night ago so this is the 4th day. Hot sweats, headaches, body aches, diarrhea, sorta metal taste in mouth, drinking iron and magnesium infused water, ate some chips and salad. Can I keep doing this? How much longer?
Celexa is Citalopram. The drug is an SSRI drug. You have been taking the drug regularly and abrupt stoppage of drug after regular use is not advised because of risk of withdrawal. The symptoms you're having like hot sweats, headache, body ache, diarrhea, metallic taste in mouth, etc., are due to withdrawal of Celexa.
If you are able to tolerate these symptoms then I don't think you should be worried. Ideally the doses should be reduced gradually. The dose should be reduced by around 20% to 25% every 2 weeks and drug can be stopped completely at around 6 to 8 weeks. The dose reduction in this manner would not cause withdrawal.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Seikhoo Bishnoi
