Hi,
There are many reasons for needing a C-section. A C-section may be planned or may be an emergency and is carried out when a vaginal delivery may put you or your baby at risk.
Reasons for needing a planned C-section include when your labour doesn't progress naturally or you go into premature labour or you have placenta praevia (where the placenta is low lying in the womb and covering part of the womb entrance). Also if you have a viral infection, such as a first attack of genital herpes or your baby is in the breech (feet first) position. Severe pre-eclampsia, multiple births, small pelvis or restricted growth of the baby. These are common reasons for needing a planned C-section.
Reasons for needing an emergency C-section are your baby may not be getting enough oxygen, labor is not progressing or an induced labor has failed or there is vaginal bleeding. There are other reasons for emergency C-sections as well.
The actual weight of the baby will not determine the need for a C-section.

Hi.. Any condition where normal vaginal delivery impairs the health of the mother or the fetus have to be managed by caesarian section.. Hence the need for c section is decided only at the time of delivery.. The size of the fetus and not the weight is taken into a consideration by the doctor for using c section.. So you may not know that you may need caesarian section till the time of delivery.. Only exception being if you have previous caesarian section or if you plan to undergoes delivery by section alone..
