Infant Having Red Area On The Shaft Of His Penis. What It Could Be?

my 14 month old son has been extremely irritable in the middle of the night and clingy during the day (very outside of his normal behaviour of his happy go lucky and independent self). Just during his change tonight before bed I had noticed a red area on the shaft of his penis (he is uncircumcised). I looked at the tip and there was a little white discharge , not a lot, just a dot. I didn t want to pull back the foreskin even gently since I have been strongly warned against that. Please help, I don t know what to do or what this is. Should I take him to the pediatrician , or is this something I can help him with at home? Thank you so much in advance

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,

Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic.

It seems the child is having some skin infection mostly due to a bacteria.

I advise you to consult the pediatrician for physical examination of the area.

Some times local infections like Balanoprosthitis will lead to discharge from penis.

Local application of an antibiotic cream may help to relive the pain and infection.

Hope I have answered your query.

Regards.

General & Family Physician Dr. Mushtaque Mastim's  Response
Hi

It seems your child is suffering from phimosis i.e. inability to retract the prepuce which is normal at birth and corrects spontaneously at 3yrs of age in 90% cases.
If there is redness it might be an inflammation it is better you get him checked by a pediatrician.

Hope that helps

Take care :)
