Infected Gums, Swollen, Painful. Removed Teeth, Missed A Piece Of Teeth. Advice?

I had 7 teeth removed that were abcessed below gumline and one was fused to the bone. Today, 3 days later, I noticed he missed a piece of my tooth and now my severely infected gums have swollen over it and my face is more swollen now than originally and the pain is unbareable yet the dentist swears he never misses any part of tooth and won't prescribe antibiotics or pain meds but more importantly doesn't think I need to be seen again for another week

Hello,
as you are having swollen gums and face after the 3 days of your tooth extractions with sever pain, it means you must be having infection in your gums along with inflammation, you should take strong antibiotics cefuroxim(twice a day) with anti inflammatory Ibuprofen+paracetamol, round the clock (8 hrly.) also take care of your mouth with rinsing warm saline water at least twice a day.
If you suspect that some piece of tooth root left in your gum than go to your Dentist and ask him for X-Ray of your gums & teeth, so he can find out whether any piece of your tooth root is left in the gum or not. By above my advice , hope you will be relieved of your pain and infection in your gum and face, good luck & take care .

Hello,

Thanks for writing to us.

The remaining tooth piece remaining within the socket has to be extracted as soon as possible.

Please do visit your dentist for further assistance.

Take complete course of antibiotics-analgesics for relieving underlying infection.

Gargle frequently with lukewarm saline for 5-6 days.
Take care.

Thank you for your query. I understand your sufferings from extraction of tooth. A swelling and severe pain in the extraction area three days after surgery means the area got infected. I am surprised why your dentist did not prescribed an antibiotics. About the part your are viewing through the extracted tissue area may be bony a spicule of the tooth socket border that may be left or not trimmed. But an IOPA radiograph of that area will confirm the diagnosis. Any way, you will only get relief from your present condition is by taking a course of antibiotic. Higher Antibiotics does not mean quick relief, and there is always chance of resistance to that antibiotics if you injudiciously use it for nothing. Almost all infection arise from dental source is controlled by simple Amoxicillin+metronidazole/Tinidazole combination. But I will suggest you to take Amoxicillin 500 mg+ clavulanic Acid 125 mg combination(several are available), 8 hourly for 5 to 7 days. If you do not have much swelling do not take an anti inflammatory like Ibuprofen. Inflammation is a beneficiary process to heal a wound. There is no need to suppress that. Along with antibiotic take paracetamol 1gm PRN i.e as and when you require. A warm salt water mouth wash will give relief and faster healing. Best wishes.

Dear friend.

Thanks for sharing your concern.

swelling and pain are indicative of infection.it is required to start a course of antibiotic for faster recovery.

Also antiseptic mouth rinsing is suggested. Also, you can do warm saline rinses too.

If you not satisfied with your present dentist please go for second opinion and also ask for a xay to see if any other root pieces are left in place,as they can further aggravate the condition.

presently maintenance of hygiene by following above measures is a must and simultaneously starting a course of antibiotic is also necessary.

Hope it helps.

Thanks.

Take care.

Hi,
As per your query, pain and swelling after after extraction usually occurs.
You can apply apply ice packs over swelling. If piece of tooth is visible to you then ask your dentist for a radiograph so that it can be confirmed.
Because piece of tooth has to be removed out if left inside socket.
Otherwise follow prescription, Take warm saline rinses .
Maintain oral hygiene and use antiseptic mouthwash.
Swelling will subside in 4-5 days so don't worry.
Take care
