Infection In Half Decayed Tooth, Slight Facial Swelling, Feeling Of Food Hitting Something In Throat Shooting Tingles, Head Pressure. On Amoxicillin. Advice

I'm 36 year old male. I have a half tooth from decay which has gotten infected. I have slight facial swelling & when I eat I can feel the food hit something in my throat when I swallow. It shoots a tingle sensation to my ear. Also I'm having head pressure. I saw a physician assistant today & she put me on amoxicillin. Will this be enough until I see a dentist in a few weeks?

Hello,

Thanks for writing in this forum,

From your symptoms I feel your tooth is grossly carious..and infection has reached towards the apex of the tooth causing pus formation and swelling...

Whatever pain you are getting in the ear, forehead is due to same nerve supply...its common..don't be worried about it...

Proper x-ray is required for the tooth and the treatment plan will be decided on the basis of it...You have to go for root canal treatment or extraction...

You can continue the antibiotic...

Do warm saline rinses 4-5times /day...you will get relief....

Don't apply any hot compress from outside that may worsen the present condition...

Consult with Dentist and get your proper treatment....

Wish you good health...

Regards....

hello
tooth decay leads to pulp exposure and subsequently infection at the apex of tooth root
now as per your description , i think that your tooth is in lower jaw and hence difficulty in swallowing due to spread of infection in glands
however what your physician suggested is good as amoxy has good results in tooth infection but let me remind you that antibiotic cover only can reduce the infection but will not completely eradicate it as the source of infection that is your decayed tooth is still there
so what i would suggest is that you get the complete treatment done by your dentist
as for your query....surely antibiotic will reduce the symptoms for a few days but dont take it for more than 5 days ...as prolonged use of antibiotics may lead to antibiotic resistance or even antibioma
best of luck

hello
thanks for query
facial swelling suggests that you have periapical infection in your decayed tooth..

a radiograph of your tooth has to be taken and if it reveals that the tooth can be saved then root canal treatment of your tooth has to started as early as possible...

amoxicillin is a good antibiotic to treat tooth infection.. i would suggest you to take it in combination with clavunic acid 125 mg.. also take pain killer like ibuprofen 400 mg. warm saline rinses 3-4 times daily will also help..

.please consult a dental surgeon soon..

regards

Hello,

Thanks for writing to us.

Amoxycillin can relieve infection temporarily.

I would suggest you to visit a dentist and get the tooth either root canal treated or extracted depending on severity of lesion.

The swelling will subside, once the treatment had undergone completely.

Meanwhile,maintain oral hygiene well.

Rinse your mouth after every meals to avoid plaque accumulation.

Take care.
