Injured Eardrum, Been Tired, Itching. Had Tympanoplasty, Oral Antibiotic Cipro. Should I Worry About Infection?

My boyfriend had a tympanoplasty 2 years ago. He went swimming last weekend and I think reinjured his ear drum. (He dove into the water, forgetting to use ear plugs) We immediately saw a general practitioner, as we couldn't get into see his specialist, and he gave oral antibiotics (Cipro) and now he has been feeling soooo tired and not himself. Bleeding from the ear also. I have him packing his ear with cotton at all times, and have to keep reminding him to quit sticking his fingers in his ear....as it now has started itching. I cant get in to see his ENT for a month...should he not try to see another doctor (specialist) before then? Im just worried about infection...drops make more sense to me too. (Im not a doctor but it just stands to reason that drops would be more effective, and he has used them in the past for such problems before the operation)

Welcome to HCM.
Pain, itching with bleeding is most likely due to fungal infection.
It usually occurs after swimming due to excessive wetness in the ear.
He has to always take care of that ear by using ear plug to prevent it.
Try to keep that ear dry.Use soft ear bud to make it dry.
Start anti fungal drops.
It is better to start ear drops, antibiotic after examined by ent specialist.
Otherwise irrelevant drops can damage his ear further.

Hello

Welcome in H.C.M.

I have gone through your query regarding bleeding and pain in ear of your boy friend, who had accidentally face this problem after swimming without using ear plug in operated ear.

As per your symptoms certainly your boyfriend had developed ear infection and this really demands care under supervision of specialist. Till you are making arrangement for specialist consultation you may do-

1- Keep ear clean and dry.

2- don't put any oil etc.

3- Better to use ear drop containing antibiotic + anti fungal + steroid and analgesic.

I hope your query is being answered.

Regards.
