Insomnia. Hypothyroid, Hypo Pituitary, Hypogonadism, Panhypothyroidism, Benign Brain Tumor. On Levothyroxine. Expect Complications?

I am a 50 year old male, who has hypothyroid/hypopituitary/hypogonadism(Panhypothryrodism?). These were secondary to a benign brain tumor as a child,(excised successfully) leaving in place the need for conjunctive medicine for prevention of recurrent seizure disorder, taking now 100mg Topirimate bid po. In addition I also take 100mcg of Levothyroxine every am po along with several other medications. My problem is, I do hold a job and live a normal life, however I have pretty severe insomnia. What can I do short of taking something like Ambien(the generic for which I have tried on prescription but did not like)? My fiancee works nights and I work days, which further complicates matters, as I miss her company when she's not at home. Any advice as what I can do?

Hi,

I understand that you do not wish to take any more medicines. There are two things that you can do. First, ask your doctor if some of morning dose of topiramate can be shifted to night, for example, 50 mg in the morning and 150 mg at night. Since topiramate has some sedative action, this may help you. The other thing that you can do is to follow sleep hygiene techniques like keeping regular hours, eating a light meal at least two hours before bedtime, keeping the bedroom clean and noisefree.

Hope this helps you. Best wishes.
