Pain in extraction socket which is 6 days old is more likely to be dry socket as you yourself stated here.
This may happen in difficult or traumatic extractions.
Even it may be due to late removal gauze pack given to you by dentist for definitive period after extraction.
Late removal of gauze pack usually takes with it the most important blood clot formed in extraction socket leaving extraction socket exposed to oral environment.
Usually placing eugenol dressing in the socket will make your pain vanish itself within a few minutes. But that dressing should be applied till pain disappears even after removing it.
Use of Anaerobic drugs along with painkillers will fasten the wound healing. As there is dull pain in such condition, painkillers should be of controlled release type which are to be taken once daily.
Avoid forceful gargling, blowing your cheeks with air.
Keep extraction socket clean always. This may take even 30 days to completely resolve.

Dry socket is a possibilty, it arises around day two post surgery. It is less likely to occur on an upper tooth extraction but not unheard of. Day 2-3 is when you are at maximum swelling and pain. After this point you should gradually improve and get better. Foul odors are a good indication of dry socket with intense pain. Dry socket does not need to be treated but usually is to get the patient out of pain. It will subside on its own. Since you are sore, and the hole is closing together it sounds like you are healing as anticipated and should notice the pain and swelling will continue to go down daily. Use warm moist compresses on your face to help with the pain. A sock full of white rice microwaved for a few minutes typically gives you a nice comforting steam. Place on face 20 minutes on 10 minutes off for an hour, do this three times a day as needed.

Dry socket occurs when the blood clot at the site of the tooth extraction has been dislodged or has dissolved before the wound has healed. Exposure of the underlying bone and nerves results in severe pain.Its chief cause are:-
-smoke
-have poor oral hygiene
-have wisdom teeth pulled
-have greater than usual trauma during the tooth extraction surgery
-Rinsing and spitting a lot or drinking through a straw after having a tooth extracted also can increase your risk of getting dry socket.
Its symptoms are:-
-Severe pain within a few days after a tooth extraction
-Partial or total loss of the blood clot at the tooth extraction site, which you may notice as an empty-
(dry) socket
-Visible bone in the socket
-Pain that radiates from the socket to your ear, eye, temple or neck on the same side of your face as the extraction
-Bad breath or a foul odor coming from your mouth
-Unpleasant taste in your mouth
-Swollen lymph nodes around your jaw or neck
If you experience all these symptoms then better consult your dentist & go for some socket dressings like- zinc oxide eugenol dressing & iodoform dressing.
Also do warm moist compress to relieve your pain.

you are absolutely right.this is due to alveolar osteitis or dry socket.
keep the extracted socket clean to protect the exposed bone.the socket is irrigated with mild warm antiseptic and then filled with obtundant dressing.commonly used socket dressings are zinc-oxide eugenol and iodoform gauze.the dressing is changed every day.most of the patients become free from symptoms after one or two dressings.
