Hi & Welcome.

I appreciate your concern for the safety of Anti TB medications during pregnancy.

The standard treatment of TB involves 2 phases of treatment:

An initial intensive phase (2-3 months) followed by a continuation phase (4-6 months). 4 drugs (Isoniazide, Rifampicin, Pyrazinamide, Ethambutol or Streptomycine ) are given in the initial phase followed by 2 drugs (Isoniazide and Rifampicin) in the continuation phase.

During pregnancy the following 2 drugs are not safe:

1. Streptomycin (WHICH CAN CAUSE CONGENITAL/NEONATAL DEAFNESS)
2. Pyrazinamide (WHICH CAN CAUSE SPINA BIFIDA IN THE NEW BORN)

Hence in view of their possible harmful effects on the growing baby (fetus), these 2 drugs should not be taken.

Hope the suggestion is useful

A feed back is appreciated.
