Is Alendronate Advisable Whem Diagnosed With Osteoporosis?

I have been recently diagnosed with osteoporosis. I was taking Calcium D3. I am 64 and have never had a broken bone in my life! My doctor has prescribed a drug for me called Alendronate 70mg tablets (once a week). Just what is this? Is it really necessary? Thanks, Diane
