Is Apriso Or Colazal An Effective Alternative For Lialda?

I have just started on Medicare & found out that the Lialda I take to maintain my remission for Crohns will cost me over $400 even with my supplement insurance. My GI doctor thinks I can stop taking any meds as I have been fine for several years & colonoscopy last Sept was all clear She did recommend Apriso or Colazal as alternatives if I felt I wanted to be cautious given my age of 69. I have been in remission over 5 years with a slight flare up 3 yrs ago when I had adult mono. Wondering if you have an opinion. Thank you very much

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Lialda is composed of 'Mesalazine', which is an aminosalicylate anti-inflammatory drug used to treat inflammatory bowel disease, including ulcerative colitis, or inflamed anus or rectum, and to maintain remission in Crohn's disease.

Apriso is also composed on 'Mesalamine', and hence can be used instead of Lialda. Colazal is composed of 'Balsalazide', which is also an anti-inflammatory drug used in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease. Balsalazide releases mesalazine in the large intestine. Thus, it has an advantage over mesalazine in the treatment of ulcerative colitis as the delivery of the active agent occurs past the small intestine to the large intestine, the active site of ulcerative colitis.

Kindly take the medications as recommended and do the necessary follow-up as advised.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
