Is Bendroflumethiazide The Right Medicine For High BP?

i have been prescribed amlodipine 10mg and bendroflumethiazide 2.5 mg for hypertension. I am male and aged 59. BP was 145/100 and came down to 125/80. I stopped using bendroflumethiazide after I ran out for a week and my doctor noticed that this did not have any effect on my BP so I stopped taking them. However I have noticed that my ankles and especially my calves have swollen quite noticeably. My question is, was the bendroflumethiazide prescribed for high BP or as a diuretic to counteract this common side effect of amlodipine? And should I go back on them? Thank you

Hi,

Yes, bendroflumethiazide is a medication used to treat high blood pressure, and it is often prescribed in combination with other medications such as amlodipine. Bendroflumethiazide is a diuretic. It helps remove excess salt and water from the body which can help to lower blood pressure.

The swelling in your ankles and calves may be a side effect of amlodipine, which can cause fluid retention. However, it is also possible that the swelling is related to discontinuing the bendroflumethiazide, as diuretics can help to reduce fluid retention.

It is important to talk to your healthcare provider about any concerns or questions you have regarding your medications. They can review your medical history and current medications to determine if bendroflumethiazide is an appropriate treatment option for you. They can also guide how to manage any side effects you may be experiencing.

If you are experiencing swelling in your ankles and calves, it is important to monitor your symptoms and report any changes to your healthcare provider. They may recommend adjustments to your medication regimen or additional tests to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
