Hi,I am Dr. Alexander H. Sheppe (Psychiatrist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My son is 18 and has been suffering from severe anxiety. His psychiatrist gave him klonopin . He is also providing him with talk therapy for 1.5 years. He also told us that he is fully developed mentally but has the emotional equivalent of a 13 year old. My son is trying hard but is still socially isolated. I have 2 questions. Can he catch up emotionally , I'm hoping when he goes to college. I suggested he ask dr. About bus par but he doesn't wanna stop klonopin he recently started. Should I ask dr. Myself about buspar since I understand it is less addicting? Thanks
Your son of 18 years is suffering from severe anxiety. Severe anxiety causes difficulty in social interaction and this might be the reason of his low Emotional Quotient. He has normal intelligence as per his psychiatrist. He is having social isolation and most likely the reason for his social isolation is anxiety. Klonopin is clonazepam and this is a benzodiazepine drug. The drug has potential to cause dependence and should be avoided to use continuously for more than 4 weeks. Buspirone is anti-anxiety medicine with good efficacy and it is not dependence producing. As per my opinion you can consult his psychiatrist for buspirone as the drug will be more safe as per my opinion.
Thanks, hope this helps you
