After going through your question, there is likely possibility of
pregnancy induced diabetes in your friend.
For appropriate diagnosis of diabetes in pregnancy there is 75gm Oral
Glucose Tolerance Test OGTT).
It is also advisable to do HbA1c level if OGTT is suggestive of diabetes in pregnancy.
HbA1c may help in diagnosis pre-existing diabetes which is diagnosed in pregnancy.
Whatever the type of diabetes, for blood sugar control in pregnancy there are limited medicine approved.
Insulin is universally accepted for blood sugar control in pregnancy.
Other medicines which can be used are
Metformin (Citapin XR contain metformin) and Glibenclamide.
It is always advisable for strict blood sugar control during pregnancy to avoid effect on baby and process of delivery.
