Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My daughter has had a sore throat for 2 weeks. It looks smooth, but whitish-yellow, not healthy pink. She is 21 years old. She was on Amoxicillin for 10 days and finished the dose on 02/18/16. She is still feeling ill with a sore throat. She went back to Student Health services on campus and was given Claritin. Please advise, if she should follow with the Claritin or seek medical services elsewhere. She is rarely sick. She had her tonsils removed at age 7.
Understanding your concern. As per your query you are wondering if Claritin advisable for persistent sore throat which seems to be due to upper respiratory tract infection which is caused by viral/ bacterial microorganism. Need not to worry. Claritin is an antihistamine that reduces the effects of natural chemical histamine in the body and use for sneezing, itching, watery eyes, and runny nose. I would suggest you to visit ENT specialist once and get it examined. You should go for throat swab test and get blood tests done and start treatment after proper diagnosis. Avoid intake of outside food. Avoid spicy and salty food substances. You should do warm saline gargles. You should take steam inhalation. You should take antiallergic medication such as Levocetirizine. Take proper course of antibiotic along with mucolytic agents.
Hope your concern has been resolved.
