Is ECG Only Solution For Heart Murmur In Kids?

My 3 year old son attended a regular Doctor check up today, very healthy, but the Doctor notice a heart flow murmur . He recommended waiting 3 months and checking again, if present then would refer him for a echo-cardiogram. Question: Should we have an echo-cardiogram completed sooner than later? is this a common occurence with children?

Hello,

Cardiac murmur can be sign of valvular heart disease and echo test is the investigation of choice to detect valvular disease. ECG can not detect most of the structural problems. You can proceed safely with the echo test. Nothing much to worry and your treatment is in the right track.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
