Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Yes Dr. Good Afternoon. Can gabapentin be used as a replacement drug for Klonopin? My son has been taking benzodiazepines for the last 3 years for anxiety. He is only 20 yrs old and he as well as I have concerns regarding addiction and the other long term effects. Thank you for taking our question.
Hello, I had gone through your question and understand your concerns. Gabapentin does not have the same indication as Klonopin, so it is not a good alternative. Gabapentin is an anticonvulsant, antiepileptic drug, and also used for nerve pain. I understand your concerns about the side effects of long term usage of Klonopin, but before you interrupt the medication you have to consult with the doctor who prescribed him, because onset interruption also has some bad effects. Always if you want to change the medication, you have to look on the same group of medication, for example in this case: anti anxiety drugs. Anyway as we are talking about prescription drugs and I think it is better to meet his doctor and he can switch to another one. I wish my answer was helpful! Best regards, Dr Eniola
