Is Gabapentin Effective In The Treatment Of Herniated Lumbar Disc?

I have several herniated lumbar disks and one ruptured, post MVA 11 years ago. My Doctor has bee treating the pain with percoset 10/325 4X/day and MS Contin 30mg every 12hours, with limited efficacy. He has now added Gabapentin 600mg morning and at bedtime. What will this new medication do to the levels of pain meds that I have been currently taking for pain? Please advise... Thanks.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I have gone through your query. Yes it's effective.

For further assessment you may require MRI back, nerve conduction studies after spine surgeon consultation.

For pain you can take tablet acetaminophen.

Continue tablet gabapentin after consultation.

In case of not getting relief you may require surgical intervention after surgeon consultation.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shyam B. Kale, General & Family Physician
