Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have been diagnosed with an umbilical hernia. For years I have had symptoms of IBS...distension, diarrhea, abdominal pain. I have always thought that I was allergic to all food because I tried elimination diets, etc. My last CBC showed my C-reactive protein at 3.3 (I had acute abdominal pain and distention) then had CT scan that identified the hernia (small). Could all these symptoms be related? Should I get surgery?
Hello, I can understand your concern for your symptoms. 1) Umbilical hernia and IBs is not connected. 2) Your mentioned symptoms are related to IBS for which you must continue medication as suggested by your physician. 3) Umbilical hernia is an incidental finding. You not have any symptoms related to it and it was diagnosed only when you underwent CT scan for other condition. 4) If size of umbilical hernia >3cm, associated with continuous pain over the hernia site or development of redness and swelling over hernia site (suggestive of obstruction) then only surgery is recommended in umbilical hernia.
Hope I answered your query. If you have any further doubts, I would be happy to help you. Have a nice day!
