Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am taking antivert 25 mg 3 times a day for a middle ear problem and I am concerned about taking lomotil with it. I just came from an emergency room visit for abdominal pain and diarrhea and the E.R doctor prescribed lomotil 25mg. I am concerned about a drug interaction and am afraid to take the lomotil.
I understand your concern, and I would like to reassure you that Lomotil would be safe to take with your Antivert. However, you might want to check on the dosage prescribed. The usual Lomotil tablets are 2.5mg/0.025mg due to the combined ingredients, and I prefer to prescribe a low dose of 1 tablet three times a day.
Note that Lomotil works by slowing down the movement of your bowels, regardless of whether you are still having diarrhoea or not. Therefore I usually advise my patients to limit the use to only the worst of the diarrhoea, and stop once the episodes become somewhat manageable. If you take it for too long you could end up constipated afterwards. Make sure you keep up with your fluids, at least 2 litres in a day if you have no other health issues.
Hope this helps, and all the best to you.
Regards, Dr. Teh
